Grindworks FAQ
1
How much does stump grinding cost?
Costs vary by stump size, accessibility, and job complexity. Our $150 minimum covers most small jobs. For a more precise figure, please call us for a free estimate!
2
How deep do you grind stumps?
We typically grind stumps 6-8 inches below ground level, which is sufficient for growing grass. If you plan to replant a tree, we can grind deeper upon request.
3
Do you clean up the wood chips?
Our 'Total Cleanup' and 'Complete Package' services include hauling away all wood chips and debris, leaving your yard clean and ready for immediate use.
4
Can stump removal help prevent pest infestations?
Yes, removing old stumps can reduce the risk of pest infestations. Stumps can attract termites, ants, and other wood-boring pests that might eventually spread to healthy trees or even buildings. Removing these stumps eliminates a potential nesting site for pests.
5
Will stump grinding damage my yard?
Our equipment is designed to minimize impact. We're skilled at navigating tight spaces and protecting your lawn, leaving the area neat and tidy.
6
What happens to the roots after grinding?
Stump grinding removes the stump and grinds down portions of the major roots below ground level, typically to 6-8 inches deep. Smaller root systems deeper in the ground generally decompose naturally over time as fungi and bacteria break down the wood.
7
Can I plant in the area after stump grinding?
Yes! After stump grinding, the area is typically ready for replanting. We would recommend full removal and use of topsoil as backfill if you intend to replant in the same location. You can plant grass, shrubs, flowers, or other vegetation.
8
Why should I remove tree stumps?
Tree stumps present several problems: they're tripping hazards, especially for children; they can cause regrowth of new shoots; they attract insects, pests, and disease; they take up valuable yard space; and they're unsightly. Removing stumps eliminates these issues, makes your yard safer and more attractive, and allows you to use the space for landscaping, planting, or other purposes.
9
What's the difference between stump removal and stump grinding?
Stump grinding mechanically grinds down the stump below ground level, leaving the root system in place to decompose. Stump removal sometimes refers to stump grinding but can also be the process of extracting the entire stump and root system from the ground with something like an excavator. Grinding is faster, less expensive, and less disruptive to the landscape. Removal can be more thorough and ideal when you need complete elimination or plan to build on the site. We can help you choose the best option for your needs.
10
Do I need to be home when you grind the stump?
Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the stumps and the work area is clear, we can complete the job. We'll confirm all details with you beforehand.
11
Are you licensed and insured?
Absolutely. GrindWorks Stump Grinding is fully licensed and insured for your peace of mind. We are happy to provide documentation upon request.
12
Is stump grinding safe near my house, driveway, or fence?
Our equipment is compact enough to work in tight spots. We always call DigSafe before any job to mark buried utilities. Stumps very close to foundations, gas lines, or driveways get assessed on a case-by-case basis — some require a modified approach, and we'll tell you upfront if anything limits the work.
13
Is there a best time of year to remove or grind a stump?
Stump removal can be performed year-round, but the best time is often during the late fall or winter when the ground is harder and less soggy, which can provide better support for heavy equipment and minimize lawn damage. However, we can adapt to any specific timing needs you may have for your project.
14
How do I prepare my property for stump grinding?
Simple preparation helps ensure smooth service: clear any obstacles or yard debris from around the stump, mark the stump location if not obvious, provide access for our equipment (typically a small to medium-sized vehicle), and if possible, water the area the day before (soft ground grinds faster). We'll provide more detailed preparation instructions when we confirm your appointment.
